(CNN Student News) -- Your students will learn about Iran's Islamic Revolution and the history of U.S.-Iran relations.

Procedure

Have students work in groups to research the history of relations between the United States and Iran since the end of World War II. Instruct students to focus on the events that led to the overthrow of the shah, and have them analyze the revolution's impact on Iran's present government. Then, have each group create a timeline of its findings.

After groups present their research to the class, pose the following questions:

  • Under what circumstances did Iran become an Islamic republic?
  • How is the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad different from that of his predecessors?
  • How would you describe the current relationship between Iran and the U.S.?
  • Why does the U.S. suspect Iran of supporting the insurgency in Iraq?
  • Do you think that it is important for the U.S. and Iran to resolve their differences? Why or why not?
  • In your view, what, if anything, could be done to improve diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Iran?
