Iraq veteran faces murder charge

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A former U.S. Army soldier was indicted Thursday on premeditated murder and other charges in connection with the rape and slaying of an Iraqi teenager and the deaths of her family members, federal authorities said.

Steven D. Green, 21, was named in a 17-count indictment delivered by a federal grand jury in Kentucky.

In addition to murder, he also is charged with a series of crimes including aggravated sexual abuse, firearms violations and obstruction of justice in connection with the alleged March 12 rampage by U.S. troops.

Green was indicted along with others not named by the grand jury for killing the girl's father, mother and 6-year-old sister near Mahmoudiya, Iraq. Other soldiers face courts martial for murder. (Read the full story about the Mahmoudiya killings)

Green had served with the 101st Airborne Division before his discharge in May. The Division's headquarters is at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He was arrested by the FBI on June 30. Prosecutors said he has remained in federal custody since then and has signed a waiver for his trial to be held in Paducah, Kentucky.

If convicted, Green could face the death penalty.

Because Green is no longer in the Army, the military cannot prosecute him. However, under a federal statute, Green is being prosecuted in U.S. district court.

Green is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment charges November 8 in federal court in Louisville, Kentucky.
