Hariri probe: More time requested
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSUNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- A prosecutor investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri is asking the U.N. Security Council to extend his mandate for one year. Hariri died February 14, 2005, in a massive car-bomb attack in Beirut that also killed more than 20 other people. His death led to massive protests and renewed international pressure on Syria to withdraw troops and intelligence assets from Lebanon, which Syria had dominated since the end of the 1975-1990 Lebanese civil war. The ongoing U.N. investigation into Hariri's death, led by Belgian Serge Brammertz, has revealed that top-ranked Syrian and Lebanese officials may have been involved in the blast. Syria's government has repeatedly denied any role in the bombing. Brammertz, commissioner of the International Independent Investigation Commission, handed in his fourth report on the probe Saturday to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Brammertz is to brief the Security Council at an open meeting Wednesday, and members are expected to make a decision Thursday.
