JERUSALEM (CNN) -- A bomber detonated Thursday at a sandwich shop near the old central bus station in Tel Aviv, police said, in the first suicide bombing in Israel this year.

Between 10 and 12 people were wounded, according to Yoni Yagodozsky, of the Israeli emergency medical services.

Palestinian security sources identified the bomber as an 18-year-old member of Islamic Jihad from the Nablus area.

The bomber, who witnesses said was wearing a backpack, was the only person reported killed, police said.

One wounded person was in serious condition, four were moderately wounded and the rest suffered light wounds, an ambulance service worker said.

The attack was the first suicide bombing in Israel this year. The old bus station in southern Tel Aviv has been the scene of two previous suicide attacks.

Video of the scene showed damage to the shop at the intersection of Neveh Sha'anan and Salomon streets. Tiles and lighting fixtures hung from electrical wires.

A uniformed rescue official could be seen carrying away a bloodied jacket, believed to have been worn by the bomber.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat quickly condemned the attack, saying it is an attempt to damage opportunities for peace just before the Palestinians and the Israelis each hold elections.

"I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms," Erakat told CNN. "It's a flagrant attempt to sabotage Palestinian elections [on Wednesday] and to undermine the efforts toward peace being exerted [to follow] after the Israeli and Palestinian elections."

A spokesman for Acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to disarm radical Palestinian groups, saying that so far, Abbas had failed to take action against the extremists.

Israelis will go to the polls on March 28.
