LONDON, England (CNN) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced he will leave office within a year. We asked for your verdict on his years in power and his legacy. The following are a selection of your replies, some of which have been edited.

It is true that there is an end to everything but I don't think Blair deserves the type of exit that is being orchestrated on him these days. Few questions to the British people: How was your economy before Blair took over and how is today? What was the unemployment rate? What was the situation in Northern Ireland? If you answer these questions honestly and sincerely you will agree with me that this bold man deserves better treatment. He might have made mistakes and miscalculations which is human but I think his success story overweighs the unsuccessful one. He is a victim of an internal coup but history and time will tell. Mr. Blair some very important European/world institutions will welcome you with open arms. You are a great and strong leader. Ciao.
Batch Jalloh, Milan, Italy

I would love to know how anyone could say that Blair has been a great PM "domestically" as someone did (tho someone from Belgium!) What, exactly, have been the "achievements" of this govt? (1) extended licensing hours, leading to even more thuggery and violence (2) dumbing down of every facet of our once proud national life (3) taxing those who actually pay for everything -- i.e. the so-called middle classes -- as a punishment (4) shame in the eyes of the world for our illegal war (5) gross, deep, utter corruption of govt members inc. Blunkett, Prescott, plus various acolytes... Great? I don't think so. I am ashamed to be British.
Melanie Eskenazi, London, UK

Tony Blair won an election and was voted into the position by the British public. There is NO tangible reason he should not finish his job and term of office. He has a clear commitment with the British voters to finish the job they are paying him for. This ridiculous situation has been caused by the "tabloid" media creating a story.
Peter Bull, Lisbon, Portugal

Sadly I think that Tony Blair should step down now. His position has become untenable due to the activities of the supporters of Gordon Brown and many others in his own party. Staying on to May will only aggravate the agony. Domestically he has been a great PM. Abroad I appreciate his pro-European stance but his alignment with the crude hard-line policies of George Bush on Iraq and Lebanon has been a bad lapse. Nevertheless I will not forgive the Labour party their undermining of Tony Blair and now fear a swing to the left.
Tim Yorke, Lasne, Belgium

I didn't (and never have) vote Labour and this government has ruined this country with it's policies, but NOT because of our ties with America, which we should continue to strengthen. Gordon Brown is arrogant to think he will make people vote for him, and to expect a voted leader to step down is outrageous. It's just time for Labour to go, whoever is leading them!
Sandie Berman, Southampton, UK

Today it is politically correct to be anti-Bush therefore anti-Blair. Bush and Blair defend Western values which today seem to have become American values only. What are European values? America defended Europe during the first World War, during WWII, from comunism during the Cold War, and now from international terrorism and islamic fundamentalism. Soon the Cold War will be against Iran and it's nuclear power. Once again the "democratic" world will be tranquilized to have American and allied troops on Iran's border. Even if it is not "politically correct." Thank you America, thank you Blair, thank you Bush.
José Oulman Carp, Portugal

Tony Blair has a strong base of support in Manchester and the north-west. He is doing a great job and the country should back Blair against terror. Tony has a clearsighted appreciation of the situation and understands that appeasement has never worked but just emboldens aggression. His detractors within his own party seem to think patriotism is an outdated concept. Nobody appreciated Churchill after the war either!
Lucy, Manchester, UK

God forbid. Should Tony Blair and Bush step down Briton and America will be history. Blair and Bush have risked their lives and jobs so that the British and the American people could be spared of future terror attacks. United we stand divided we fall.
Chandra, Sri Lanka

Tony Blair should step down to give room for other innovative leaders.
Nakabale Semei, Uganda

Dear CNN, Tony Blair step down? Come on. Blair? Why not Bush? He's the incompetent one. The British should be so lucky. We're stuck with an incurable disease for four years. Can't wait until another doctor comes in to fix the problem.
Dr. John Cary, Anyang City, South Korea, formerly of Georgia, U.S.

I believe the question for this morning was whether or not Blair should leave office? The answer is absolutely. His siding with Dubya in the Iraq War and his constant posturing about not wanting to name an exact time to leave office, is only creating more bad blood all round and leaves his party vulnerable to the advances of the Conservatives in the UK. If he really wants to do his party and country a favor, and leave a somewhat "untarnished" legacy, he should just bow out gracefully now. Get out while the goings good I say.
Jim Cook, Amsterdam

I do not think Tony Blair should step down, because of in house fighting and public opinion. Tony Blair has vision and foresight, he is an intelligent man who knows his own mind, just because he agrees with President Bush does not make him a poodle or one who bows down to Bush. I think the British Public will be sorry when Blair is gone, because the next PM will probably not have his vision or guts and will pander to the public's demands. This will bring worse problems. Iraq had to be dealt with and so does Iran and Syria.
Doreen Holmes, S. Africa

What a shame it will be to see him go. Here's hoping it's later rather than sooner. He's the best PM the UK's had for a very long time. I wonder if he's interested in replacing the bozo of a PM we have down here?
Jason Murdoch, Sydney, Australia

We should be careful. Why must Blair go? Probably because of his agreement with Bush. This is not a cogent reason. We shold be careful with the way we condone Islamic fanatism. This is the issue.
Ben

I am amazed at the childish nature of the press regarding the present Blair situation. It is obvious that the Labour party is doing its famous positioning shuffle for future leadership. The real problem is the stupid and uninformed nature of many of the voting public. The great dislike of Bush in Europe is the direct result of a decadent society that refuses to accept that there are madmen trying their very best to destroy us. Time to wake up Europe and thank your lucky stars that the Republicans and Bush have the intestinal fortitude to take the terrorists on. Protecting our own is our highest duty. Grow up people!
Christian Ko, Budapest

Dear sirs, Time out for Tony as well as Bush. Nothing last forever. While Bush will sooner than latter follow Blair's exit, they had made the world a very unsafe especially for especially their nationals. Blair had also prepared the stage for another Rwandan-style civil war in the English speaking Southern Cameroons -- the only former British Trust Territory that had been denied independence. This had become a ticking time bomb and Blair will be responsible.
Prince Lawrence Ayamba, Brussels, Belgium
