KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A soldier from NATO's International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) was killed following a roadside bomb attack and small arms fire from militants in southern Afghanistan early Saturday, a NATO statement said.

The attack occurred while the soldier was conducting a vehicle-mounted patrol near an ISAF patrol base in the volatile Panjwayi district of Kandahar province.

"One of the soldiers was wounded and later died of injuries sustained. One vehicle was also damaged," the statement said.

NATO later sent attack helicopters and an explosives ordinance disposal team to the area.

The nationality of the soldier who died was not released in accordance to NATO policy.
