(CNN) -- Eighteen insurgents have been killed in a firefight between coalition soldiers and militants in eastern Afghanistan, while a Canadian soldier died in an accident, military officials said.

The fighting took place at the Kamdesh Provincial Reconstruction Team base, located in northeastern Nuristan province, a military coalition statement said.

"Thirty insurgents attacked the base with small-arms and rocket fire. Coalition forces responded with small arms, mortar and joint fires," it said. Two U.S. soldiers and an Afghan National Policeman received minor wounds in the attack.

Separately, a Canadian soldier was killed "in a weapons-related accident" west of Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday "while conducting routine operations," Canadian forces said.

"The incident occurred during "operations outside the Zharey district center." The victim was identified as Master Cpl. Jeffrey Scott Walsh of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba.

A recent arrival in Afghanistan "as part as the new rotation of soldiers contributing to Task Force Afghanistan," Walsh is the 25th Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan.
