DHAKA, Bangladesh (CNN) -- Riot police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, leaving several people injured.

Police and activists say the fighting Sunday was taking place in different parts of the city.

Thousands of riot police and paramilitary forces were brought into Dhaka in anticipation of the massive opposition protests scheduled for Sunday.

The 14-party opposition alliance -- led by the main opposition party, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League -- has a number of demands.

They are asking for election and governmental reforms and are giving the government 24 hours to meet their demands, according to a coordinator.

They are also demanding the chief election commissioner and two other commissioners be removed; and a halt to what they call blanket arrests, said Absdul Jalil, coordinator of the alliance and general secretary of the main opposition party.

If after 24 hours the demands are not met, Jalil said, the opposition parties will threaten to launch general strikes throughout the country.
