SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (CNN) -- A blast near a bus station Saturday in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed two people and wounded 23, police said.

Four of the wounded are in critical condition, doctors treating them said.

The blast took place at the main bus stand in the town of Doda.

Police said militants hurled a powerful hand grenade near the bus stand when a large number of commuters was waiting.

Doda district and adjoining Udhampur were in the news early this month when suspected Islamic militants killed 36 members of the area's minority Hindu community.

Islamic separatist militants in Kashmir have been fighting for a separate state for years. Thousands of people have been killed.
