Indian politician dies after shooting
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSNEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Pramod Mahajan, an Indian politician who represented the moderate face of his Hindu nationalist BJP party, has died in Mumbai. He died on Wednesday, 12 days after he was shot in his residence, allegedly by his younger brother. Mahajan, long regarded as the strategist who moved the BJP into the mainstream of Indian politics by striking deals with other parties, was 56. He was an understudy of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and was considered the voice of the young, progressive leadership of the party. Mahajan served as political adviser to Vajpayee and was the BJP's general secretary. He also worked as India's minister for information and broadcasting, information technology and parliamentary affairs. His party followers even put forward his name as a prospective prime ministerial candidate. He was shot on April 22 in his Mumbai apartment; police say the assailant was his own brother, Pravin Mahajan, who later surrendered. Police say the brother pumped three bullets into Pramod Mahajan. The BJP leader was taken to Mumbai's Hinduja Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He suffered multiple organ failure on Wednesday. Doctors said he died at 4:10 p.m. local time. Ram Ramgopal in New Delhi contributed to this report.
