CNN Connects: The Panel

(CNN) -- CNN Connects: The Price of Progress will examine the evaluate the environmental issues posed by China's rapid economic growth. The following are biographies of some of the panelists taking part:

James Harkness

Former China Director, Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF)

James Harkness

James Harkness recently left the Worldwide Fund for Nature as its China Director and has been appointed as the President of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (a sustainable development think tank in the United States).

Harkness has lived in China for more than 15 years and began working with the WWF in 1999. He led the WWF in a major transformation of its focus from wildlife conservation to a broader sustainable development agenda.

Under his leadership, WWF China has also entered into major conservation partnerships in China with HSBC, BP, and other companies. While at the WWF, he also managed a staff of 70 people in eight offices, concentrating on issues such as the Yangtze River basin, and projects on the Tibetan plateau, in the Yellow Sea, and in the Amur-Heilong River basin.

Harkness currently lives in Beijing.

Sheri Liao

Founder, Global Village Beijing

Sheri Liao

Xiaoyi (Sheri) Liao is the president and founder of Global Village of Beijing, a non-profit and non-governmental organization dedicated to environmental education, public participation and community services.

Liao holds a masters in Philosophy, and is an environmental journalist, producing environmental TV programs broadcast nationwide through CCTV in China.

One of her main work focuses is promoting a sense of individual responsibility and empowerment in relation to environmental issues in China.

Voted as "Woman of the Year" by Woman's Magazine in 2001 and "Commonwealth Charity Person of the Year" by CCTV in 2005, Liao also won the International Banksia Award in Australia, the country's most prestigious environmental award and the Sophie Prize in Norway.

Wang Xiangrong

Professor, Fudan University

Wang Xiangrong

Professor Wang Xiangrong teaches Urban Ecology and Environmental Planning at Fudan University in Shanghai. He is also the Director of the university's Research Center for Urban Eco-Planning and Design.

Wang's research interests include environmental assessment and planning, urban ecology, environmental policy and, sustainable development, and eco-city studies.

Wang was recently a Fulbright scholar-in-residence at the State University of New York, and has led over 50 research projects in China in landscape ecology, eco-tourism, forestation, urban greening, and master planning.

His academic and professional career include publishing 12 academic books and more than 110 policy papers.

Wang has held leadership positions in the Chinese Society of Ecology, the Society of China Sustainable Development, and Deputy Head of the Greening Commission of Shanghai's Municipal Construction Committee.

Ma Jun

Environmental Consultant

Ma Jun

Ma Jun is one of China's leading environmentalists. He is the author of the acclaimed book, "China's Water Crisis," a landmark study on the historical origins of China's present day problems with floods, water scarcity and water pollution.

Ma is currently writing his second book on china's environment and sustainability, and also serving as an advisor to several Non Government Organizations's working on river protection.

Ma is a former consultant at the SINOSPHERE Corporation, advising multinational companies on Chinese labor and environmental regulations.

Prior to his career as a consultant, Ma worked for the South China Morning Post as an investigative journalist from 1993-2000, producing his own reports and writing many feature articles on the environment.

Today, Ma continues to promote sustainable environmental management through various publications and lectures.
