Chinese engineers shot in Pakistan
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSQUETTA, Pakistan (AP) -- Unknown attackers gunned down three Chinese engineers and a Pakistani driver in southwestern Pakistan Wednesday evening, police sources told CNN. The attack happened in Hub in Balochistan province, a tribal area where recent violence has prompted Pakistan's army to conduct operations. The engineers were helping construct the multimillion dollar Gwadar seaport in Balochistan, a joint venture by Pakistan and its key ally, China. The Chinese consulate in Karachi said the attack happened while engineers were in a car with three others, according to China's state-run Xinhua news agency. They worked for a cement company in Hefei, in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui, Xinhua reported. Balochistan's tribal groups have complained that, although the province is rich in natural gas and will be the site of Pakistan's second major seaport, residents do not receive basic resources, such as drinking water. Chinese engineers working in Pakistan's tribal areas have been a target of terrorist attacks in the past. The recent violence has raised fears of a repeat of fighting that rocked Baluchistan in the 1970s, when thousands died in a large-scale uprising. A car bomb in May 2004 killed three Chinese engineers helping to build the Gwadar seaport, according to China's Xinhua News Agency. Five months later, kidnappers abducted two Chinese engineers working on a dam construction project in South Waziristan province and threatened to kill the Chinese unless several al Qaeda members held by Pakistan were released. One Chinese engineer was freed and the other died in a rescue operation. CNN's Syed Mohsin Naqvi contributed to this report.
