U.S. service member killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A U.S. service member was killed Monday during a gunbattle in northeastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said.

According to the military statement, the American was on patrol northwest of the town of Methar Lam in Laghman province.

The military did not release the service member's name pending notification of next of kin.

Also Monday, Afghan and U.S. forces killed an attacker and wounded a second one near a border checkpoint south of Khowst. Two border policemen also were wounded.
