Train carriages plunge into ravine
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A Pakistani passenger train has derailed Sunday in the eastern part of the country, causing six train cars to plummet into a ravine and killing at least two people, government officials tell CNN. Pakistan's Interior Minister, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, said two people were confirmed dead and at least 30 injured. Another official said 621 people were aboard the train, more than 400 of them on the cars that fell into the ravine. Ishaq Khan Khakwani, the Pakistani Minister for Railways, said three other cars derailed but did not fall into the ravine, which investigators believe to be 50 to 100 meters (150 to 300 feet) deep. Darkness was hindering the investigation, Khakwani said. The accident took place near the Domoli train station between Lahore and Rawalpindi. The train was traveling to Lahore, the capital of Punjab. It departed Rawalpindi at about 6 p.m., Khakwani said, and derailed about an hour later. Army and federal investigators were on the scene, he said. CNN's Syed Mohsin Naqvi contributed to this report.
