(CNN) -- Up to six Australian tourists have been killed and 24 injured in a bus crash in Egypt, Australian officials say.

The accident happened on the road between Alexandria and the Egyptian capital Cairo at about 8:45 p.m. local time (1845 GMT) Tuesday.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said in Sydney on Wednesday he could confirm the number of dead and injured in the bus crash, and that one of the dead was a child.

"We assume they were largely Australians," he said.

Downer said a group of about 90 Australian police and emergency workers and their families were on holidays in Egypt, traveling on two buses, when one bus crashed.

He said while it was raining at the time, the cause of the accident was not yet established.

Downer said Australia's ambassador in Cairo, Bob Bowker, was on the scene with other embassy staff to render assistance. The injured had been taken first to a local hospital and then moved to a hospital closer to Cairo with the aid of the Egyptian army.

Downer said the group members were from the Australian states of Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
