LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- At least seven Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed early Tuesday as militants fired rockets on a checkpoint in the Miranshah area of the North Waziristan tribal area bordering Afghanistan, an intelligence official has told CNN.

A resulting firefight between the paramilitary forces and militants lasted 90 minutes.

Pakistan Army Major General Shaukat Sultan told CNN that 14 suspected terrorists were killed in the clash.

The shootout came just four days after eight paramilitary soldiers were killed in another North Waziristan attack. And a separate attack on Monday wounded four paramilitaries.

The clashes are the result of an ongoing offensive by the Pakistan government against suspected al Qaeda members in the region since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

Several hundred Pakistani soldiers have been killed in the subsequent fighting.
