(CNN) -- About 120 people are feared dead after a boat capsized on Ghana's Lake Volta, police in the West African country told CNN.

Thirty people have been rescued so far and three bodies recovered from the boat, which was carrying about 150 people at the time of the accident on Saturday, police spokesman Kwesi Ofori said on Monday.

The boat, believed to be a local ferry, was travelling from Afram Plains to Rwora Rwora on the lake, the world's largest man-made reservoir, and has not yet been found, Ofori said.

He added that police and military teams were aiding in the search on the lake -- which covers 8,500 square km (3,275 square miles), more than three times the size of Luxembourg.

Justice Amegashe of the Department of Transport -- which in Ghana is part of the Ministry of Ports, Harbors and Railways -- told CNN he was traveling to the region later in the day as a representative of the ministry.

Amegashe said he learned about the accident in the newspaper Monday morning and had no answers as to why it took so long for news to reach the national government.

Amegashe and Ofori said the cause of the accident was unknown but added that officials have been warning boat owners about overcrowding for the past few weeks.

He added that the boat hit a stump as it crossed

CNN's Alfonso Van Marsh contributed to this report.
