Tornadoes strike Texas, Louisiana

(CNN) -- At least four tornadoes were reported to have touched down Monday morning in southeast Texas and southern Louisiana, the National Weather Service said.

At least four people were hurt in southern Louisiana, where boats came loose from their moorings, and a gas line ruptured, near the town of Leeville, according to reports. Mobile homes also were reported overturned, trapping people inside.

More than 20 tornado warnings were issued in a two-hour period Monday in southeastern Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, including the Houston and New Orleans metropolitan areas, according to the NWS. (Watch forecast for a wet Monday -- 2:07)

At least 10 inches of rain fell in the Houston-Galveston area of Texas overnight, according to the NWS. KHOU-TV, citing Houston police, reported on its Web site that two women drowned in an SUV on Interstate 45.

The Associated Press reported that a dozen Houston-area school systems cancelled classes on Monday because of flooded roads and power cuts.

Coastal flooding in southern Louisiana threatened homes near the town of Leeville. A combination of high tides and strong southeasterly winds caused many roadways and homes along the Gulf Coastal region to flood, the NWS said.

Heavy rain -- 4 to 6 inches in some places -- is expected across the southern- and mid-Mississippi Valley and the Ohio River Valley on Monday. The rain is expected to slowly move eastward Tuesday, bringing the chance of flooding to other areas of the Southeast.
