(CNN) -- We asked our readers to put on their thinking caps and come up with some suggested names for Zoo Atlanta's newest addition. Mother Lun Lun gave birth to a baby giant panda Wednesday afternoon. Zoo keepers don't yet know the baby's sex, so we asked you to send in for names for both a boy and girl. Several themes emerged in the names submitted so far. Some are serious, some are silly, but all show originality and thought.

Here's a sampling of the early entries, some of which have been edited:

Girl, "Zi Chi", for black silk & white jasmine.
Boy, "Zi Bo", for black silk & bright white. Best wishes to Mama and her new bouncing baby!
Hershey Miller, New York City

Fred if a boy . . . Ethel if a girl.
Ron Kershner, Hagerstown, Maryland

If Boy - Jiang, If Girl - Mulan.
Chryssanthi Barris, Worcester, Massachusetts

Palanta name for male or female.
Carmen Johnson, Vidalia, Georgia

If it's a boy, let's name him Irwin, after the late Australian naturalist, Steve Irwin. If it's a girl, how about Bindi, after the daughter he loved so much. I think this would be a fitting tribute to a renowned environmentalist. We'll miss you Steve!
Leonard Skath, Stillwater, Oklahoma

I would name the Panda "Oreo." Pandas are black and white like Oreos, sweet Like Oreos and everyone loves PANDAS AND OREO'S.
Linda RyanJames, Oakhurst, New Jersey

Boy- Sherman. Girl- Scarlett.
Richard Painter, New Orleans, Louisiana

Male - General Lee. Female - Magnolia.
Bill Funderbunk, Sevierville, Tennessee

The epic 'Mahabharata' of India has famous characters known as the 'PANDAVAS' -- the group of 5 warrior princes who were also the good Samaritans. If the PANDA is a boy I prefer him to be named as such. The name also fits with the animal species; it's the right choice. In case it is a girl, name her 'RANI' which means 'QUEEN' in Hindi. She is destined to rule the hearts of millions visiting the zoo in future.
Gourab Chatterjee, Kolkota, India

If a girl - Zsa Zsa. If a boy - Bling Bling.
Kathie Frye, Roswell, Georgia

If she's a girl panda, name her "Qiu" (Chinese for "Autumn"). If he's a boy panda, name him "Zhu" (Chinese for "Bamboo"). We look forward to visiting this new panda soon!
Lauren Stafford, 10, Bartlett, Tennessee

San Xing or Xing San - lucky three or third time is the charm (good luck).
Rachel Willis, Durham, North Carolina

Boy: George - Girl: Georgia.
Julia James, Mexico

I think a suitable name for the new baby Panda is "Bai Bai". I chose this name in honor of the Chinese poet "Bai Juyi" (AD 772-846) who wrote about the "power of the pandas" and their extraordinary magical and spiritual qualities.
Patty Ising, Bakeslee, Pennsylvania

If it's a boy, it ought to be named Li Wang, meaning 'jade king.' If it's a girl, name it Xia Hua, meaning 'summer flower.'
Carolyn Drumsta, Larchmont, Vermont

Kudzu--boy or girl.
Bea Coker, Marietta, Georgia

AtLanda the Panda!
Lisa Skelly, Wyoming, Michigan

LANTABEAR
Joanne Primrose, Winnipeg, Canada

My son says girl name - Yonya, boy name - Ooka.
Stephanie Smith, Clifton, Colorado

What about Yin and Yang? Or Fen & Shui? E-mail me if I win. Thanks!
Virginia Mosbaugh, Indianapolis, Indiana

Girl - Slinky. Boy - Denzel.
Debbie Quintal, Nashua, New Hampshire

I think the panda should be named Shirley. The mayor's name is Shirley.
Sarah Swift, Atlanta, Georgia

I just like Tfer McGovern, pretty funny name.
Tfer McGovern, Orlando, Florida

Boy - PanHe. Girl = PanShe
Marisue Alsobrook, North Fort Myers, Florida

PEACHTREE - Why not? Everything else in Atlanta is called Peachtree.
Tom Carroll, Spring City, Pennsylvania

Girl - Poolee (Assamese Language, Assam, India) - means new shoot coming out of seeds or parent plants. It is also a common word used while cuddling babies). Boy - Pochoo (no meaning. Its just one of the cute little words used while cuddling babies with joy. I call my son Pochoo.)
Sultana Parveen, Ashburn, Virginia

How about Ming Ming? Which mean smart. I think everyone will like to see how smart the panda is. This name is for both sexes.
Laura Chung, Bonita Springs, Florida

Manda (girl) - Tanda (boy).
Donna Krajewski, Addison, Illinois

I would name it Cricket if a girl and Hedjie (Navajo for spot) if a boy.
Heather Rothey, Ogden, Utah

How exciting! I suggest the following names: male - BONZO - Bundle of Nifty Zoo Optimism. Female - Ling Ling - after the 1st female panda given to the US by China over 20 years ago.
Libby Hall, Alexandria, Virginia

Regardless of sex, I like the idea of naming it "Bao Bao" - it is my understanding this means "treasured gift," a testament to the difficulties of breeding pandas and rearing their cubs.
Avery Reaves, Atlanta, Georgia

Peachy-king for a boy (play on Peking). CoCoke for a girl (since Coke does business in Atlanta).
Mike Morales, Alexander, Virginia

Unisex name... FUN FUN.
James Phillips, Miami, Florida
