(CNN) -- A shooting rampage fueled by a domestic dispute in rural Vermont left two people dead and three others, including the gunman, wounded after he apparently turned the gun on himself, police said Thursday.
Christopher A. Williams, 26, of Essex, Vermont, was in police custody at a Burlington hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Essex police said in a statement.
The shootings began about 1:55 p.m., when police were notified of shots fired at a home. Responding officers found the body of Linda Lambesis, 57, in her home, police said.
While responding to that call, authorities received reports of shots fired at the Essex Elementary School. Additional officers responded to the school and found that two people had been shot there, police said. The suspect had fled the building.
In the school, police found the body of Mary Shanks, 56. Mary Snedeker, 52, was wounded and taken to a hospital in Burlington, authorities said.
At the time of the incident, 39 faculty and staff members were at the school, police said. School was not in session; classes are scheduled to start next week.
At about 3 p.m., police said, they received a report of shots fired at a third location. Upon arrival, officers found Chad Johansen, 26, wounded. Johansen had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, police said. Williams was also found wounded at the third location.
Police said Williams used a large-caliber handgun in the shootings.
Williams was "an acquaintance of the daughter of Linda Lambesis," the police statement said. "Lambesis' daughter is a teacher at the Essex Elementary School and was not injured in the incident."
Essex Police Chief David Demag initially had said the suspect shot his ex-girlfriend's mother at one location, then went to the school and shot his former girlfriend.
The conditions of the wounded were not given by police.
