Chemical blast closes interstateTanker hauling TNT byproduct explodes near Baltimore
(CNN) -- A tanker filled with a hazardous chemical blew up on an interstate north of Baltimore, Maryland, shutting down all lanes of I-83 for about three hours, according to Baltimore County police. State highway administration spokeswoman Kellie Boulware said southbound lanes had reopened by 4:30 p.m. It was unclear if anyone was injured or if any other cars were involved in the incident. It is not yet known what caused the tanker carrying trinitromethane to explode around 1:30 p.m. on the right shoulder of the interstate, according to police dispatcher Garrett Conner. As a precaution, authorities shut down all four lanes of I-83 about 15 miles north of Baltimore, Conner said. Trinitromethane is a "byproduct of the nitration process of TNT manufacture," according to the Environmental Protection Agency's Web site.
