  • The Sweet Auburn Springfest, held annually in May, is traditionally the largest street festival in the south east of America. Thousands of people come to Auburn Avenue and the surrounding area to celebrate its history and take part in arts, literature, film, business, music and food festivals.

  • Due to its massive urban sprawl, Atlanta is extremely car dependent. Bear this in mind if you plan to walk on the wild side -- lack of sidewalks and reckless drivers could send you the way of "Gone with the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell, who died after she was hit by a speeding taxi.

  • The Atlanta Jazz Festival, a month-long celebration that takes place each May, is one of the biggest free jazz festivals in the US. Legends and newcomers perform in venues across the city, and the event culminates in a 3-day outdoor music extravaganza.

  • A warning to allergy sufferers: Atlanta has one of the highest pollen counts in the United States. In April the city is dusted in yellow pine pollen with a count that often exceeds 2,000ppcm and though the Georgian rains bring welcome relief, you might want to pick another time of year to visit.
