Do you have an inside tip on the Jamaican capital? Send us your ideas and suggestions below.

  • Cricket is Jamaica's national sport and when the West Indies come to town, it's an event not to be missed. Test matches and one-day games are held at Sabina Park, one of the sport's most picturesque and colourful venues. The Windies play two one-dayers against India in May, followed by a test at the end of June.
  • Kingston has a reputation as a dangerous city with high levels of personal crime and gang violence, but if you stay away from a few notorious neighbourhoods you should survive unscathed. New Kingston is pretty much safe, while West Kingston should be avoided.
  • Jamaica may be synonymous with marijuana but Kingston probably isn't the place you'd want to discuss the pros and cons of legalization with the local police.
  • Be warned if you're feeling peckish in Jamaica. While the country has many great dishes to sample, typically laid back restaurants mean that fast food is unheard of. Order lunch about an hour before you want to eat it, just to be on the safe side.
