NEW YORK (CNN) -- Trans-Atlantic flights continued to be hit Monday by the heavy snowfall on the U.S. East Coast.

Despite airports reopening there was a heavy backlog of flights and airlines in Europe were forced to make cancellations.

Travelers were being told to contact individual airlines for the latest information.

British Airways said they had been forced to cancel 15 flights in 48 hours, including flights BA 112 and BA 174 from New York JFK to London Heathrow Monday, along with BA 1502 to Manchester.

"Passengers are asked to look on the British Airways Web site, BA.com," said a spokeswoman.

She said despite airports in the New York area reopening Monday, there was a heavy backlog of flights due to congestion.

Two flights from London Heathrow to JFK were canceled Monday afternoon -- BA 115 at 1600 and BA 113 at 1700.

Virgin Atlantic told CNN that flight VS 017 from London Heathrow to Newark was canceled Monday, together with VS 046 from JFK to London at 2110 New York time.

Lufthansa reported five flight delays between Sunday and Monday (two flights to the U.S., three flights from the U.S.), but no cancellations. One flight, LH401 was delayed 11 hours.

The airline said it believed flights were back on track and anticipated no delays on Monday evening's flights.

Newark Liberty International Airport, New York's JFK Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport all reopened Monday.

A spokeswoman for BAA, which runs airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Glasgow, told the UK's Press Associaton that passengers should check with their airline before travelling.

The BAA Web site showed United Airlines and American Airlines services from the storm-hit region were also affected.

The Association of British Travel Agents told PA passengers caught abroad would have to "wait out" the heavy snow and strong winds.
