As a photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn has been responsible for some of the most striking cultural images of the past three decades.

The Dutchman achieved public recognition with his stark black and white images of four earnest young Irishmen in the Californian desert for the sleeve of U2's celebrated "The Joshua Tree" album in 1987.

Corbijn's collaboration with the band has been ongoing, and includes the artwork for "Achtung Baby," the 1992 video for "One," and the sleeve photography for 2000's "All That You Can't Leave Behind."

Inspired by punk to move to London in 1979, Corbijn had already worked with bands such as Joy Division and Captain Beefheart and would go on to work with many other acts at the bleaker end of the pop spectrum, including Nirvana, Metallica and Depeche Mode.

It's a process that reaches a logical conclusion in 2006 with "Control" -- Corbijn's first full-length feature film about the troubled life and death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.
