Born and raised in the Bronx, Don Byron is widely considered one of the best jazz clarinetists of his generation.

Originally studying classical clarinet, he expanded his interests into Salsa and Latin music -- taking him on a musical quest for what he describes as "a sound above genre."

His groundbreaking first album "Tuskegee Experiments" earned him the title "Jazz Artist of the Year" from monthly jazz, blues and roots bible, Down Beat magazine. His most recent recording, "Ivey Divey," released on Blue Note records, was voted Album of the Year in Jazz Times magazine.

Following a formal musical education in classical clarinet, his career has seen him work on a wide range of projects, including directing a series of concerts and festivals, musical arrangements for Broadway shows by Stephen Sondheim and appearances and scores for several films.

Having 10 albums to his name and appearances on dozens more, Byron's performances have included collaborations with artists around the world -- from the Duke Ellington Orchestra to Afro-funk diva Angelique Kidjo.
