Ibiza has long been one of Europe's top gay destinations. Visit La Troya Asesina (Wednesdays at Amnesia, Thursdays at Space) for an outrageous night out.

For a taste of the simpler island life, head to the hamlet of Santa Gertrudis De Fruitera, home to a few galleries and some fine bars around the main square to kick back and watch the world go by.

The summer season runs from May to September but avoid August if you can. The beaches are at their most overcrowded, queues are at their longest, and prices are at their highest.

When it all gets too much, head for the island of Formentera to de-tox and re-charge. Just half and hour away by ferry from Ibiza Town, it's the antithesis of its larger neighbor. Nightlife is virtually non-existent and there's very little to do other than take in some of the island's stunning beaches. Hire a bike to get around.

Ibiza is famous for its sunsets. One of the best can be seen from the wild southwestern coastline, looking across towards the spectacular rocky outcrop at Es Veda.
