The "Old Firm" derby (Glasgow Celtic vs. Glasgow Rangers) is one of the great spectacles in world soccer -- although critics would say the rivalry between the clubs as one of the main causes of the city's sectarian problems. Get tickets if you can; don't wear colors if you want to stay out of trouble.

Glasgow has the best shopping in the UK outside of London. For top-flight designer outlets including point your credit card in the direction of the central Princes Square Mall or the Italian Center. More eclectic designs, gifts, funky bric-a-brac and other Glaswegian gems are to be found in the West End district.

Food comes a poor second to drink in the affections of many Glaswegians; this is, after all, the birthplace of the deep-fried Mars Bar, a culinary delicacy that depends entirely on copious alcoholic consumption for its late-night appeal.

If you're after a hip hotel then the Mackintosh-designed Arthouse on Bath Street is definitely the place to stay. Features include a waterfall cascading through the middle of the hotel, an antique iron cage lift leading to a basement sushi grill, and luxurious Gothic rooms with high ceilings, stained glass and velvet walls.
