13: The day in October when egg lovers can celebrate World Egg Day.

4.93 billion: The estimated number of egg-laying hens in the world.

53.4 million: The number in tonnes of table eggs produced in 2002, with 20.25 million tonnes produced in China, which is the world's largest egg producer.

1 in 20,000: The percentage of eggs that can harbor Salmonella enteritidis bacterium inside their shells.

13: The number of people attacked with eggs over a 14-month period who went to the eye unit of Liverpool hospital seeking treatment. Most cases were clustered around Halloween.
