"As medical science advances - and implants become more common... will your government intervene?"
I think government will not intervene since all of us want to make the impending fantasy true. Who would not want to be able to correct a physiological problem or have a genetically advanced brain and body?
No, I don't think my government will intervene since there is nothing more important than saving somebody's life, and my government has got humane leaders, and they are rational thinkers.
Coming from an African perspective, the implant 'fad' hasn't quite caught on in Kenya. Here it is still viewed as a 'Hollywood habit' as the procedure isn't that common in Kenya. However, people are aware of it but for now it is simply a laughable matter to most people here and I'm sure the government will not hesitate to shrug off the topic for now!
Yes I think that my government will intervene. If technology advances to creating superhumans and every person who can afford the expenditure will crave for such a gift. This will create a large difference in the existing human race and survival of the fittest phenomena may come into being. We will have to take care of all the contentious issues and make sure that only the cases with no other alternatives get this sort of advanced treatment.
The government will have something to say, for sure, because it's the only one to authorize or to ban such activities. But the main question to be asked here is: what will be the opinion of the Christian and Muslim religious authorities? Because their opinion will have a very heavy impact on any decision the government might take, and historically those authorities were united in confronting any change that had a controversial nature.
