A World Cup that was more than just Football.. ________________________________ • From: Aarif M.Pirmohamed, U.S. • Posted: July 10, 2006 • Comment: What a terrific game played by Italy team. They played extra time they were draw 1-1 and after that it went penalty shoot up their won by 5-4. All the players, which have played, deserve praises. The coach has done good to reach his team in finals and be a World Cup champions. ________________________________ • From: Kiarra • Posted: July 10, 2006 • Comment: I don't have a picture or anything but I want to say congratulations to Germany ... I am not German but I've always supported them. ________________________________ • From: Sydney Menees; Kansas • Posted: July 10, 2006 • Comment: As we all know, the US was out in the first round of the World Cup, however, they are the ONLY team that Italy didn't beat! ________________________________ • From: Frank; Alberta • Posted: July 07, 2006 • Comment: 1) Video replay has to used; bad decisions leave hard feelings. 2) Germany scored big time as hosts. 3) Penalty shoot-out in the final? May the best team win! ________________________________ • From: Rommel Reyes; Saudi Arabia • Posted: July 07, 2006 • Comment: I bought two football-themed shirts back in April 2006. One was printed with ITALY and FRANCE on the other. It was so amazing that when everybody was asking which two teams would be playing in the World Cup finals, my shirt collection has the answer long before the World Cup has started. ________________________________ • From: Markus; Germany • Posted: July 06, 2006 • Comment: We lost the match but not the feeling. We are proud of our team and say congratulations to the winner. We are still having fun with making party with the guest from all over the world. ________________________________ • From: Figo Fan; Sri Lanka • Posted: July 06, 2006 • Comment: I was dreaming Portugal come to final as they were doing well up to semi final. We are extremely sorry for Portugal. I think they are bit unlucky. But they did their best and shown their talents. They have not yet finished. I wish you good luck on Saturday. ________________________________ • From: Craig Carlyle; B.C Canada • Posted: July 05, 2006 • Comment: I was at the airport in Rome last night. I thought I'd kill some time if I pulled out my laptop and watch the game since no TVs in the terminal had it on. Next thing I know, crazy Italians surround me. My dad counted a total of 29 people watching my screen behind me later on in the night. Guess Italians really love Football. ________________________________ • From: Levi; England • Posted: July 04, 2006 • Comment: It was fun while it lasted, thank you lads, better luck next time.... ________________________________ • From: Katiwa • Posted: July 04, 2006 • Comment: I am a bit confused on who to support Germany, Portugal or France. France has some of the best strikers, Portugal has talented young and upcoming strikers, on the other hand Germany because of home advantage and it has the leading top scorer so I would not be surprised if Germany win but am going with PORTUGAL and I hope Cristiano wins the Gillette young player award. Good luck Cristiano. ________________________________ • From: Temple Orji; Nigeria • Posted: July 02, 2006 • Comment: I congratulate FIFA for the war against racism. The flames of racism, ignited by a minority at soccer matches cannot and must not be allowed to divide the family of football. ________________________________ • From: R.A. Bryant • Posted: June 30, 2006 • Comment: Germans move a little bit closer to putting the past behind, as they are doing an excellent job of showing the world that they are truly, "Guest Amongst Friends." ________________________________ • From: Hector Benavides; Monterrey, Mexico • Posted: June 30, 2006 • Comment: My congratulations to the host cities and their citizens, If not for the bad system of tickets sales by FIFA, Germany has my vote to be the World Cup organizer on a permanent basis. ________________________________ • From: Peter; Hong Kong • Posted: June 29, 2006 • Comment: Did the England national team play the other night or was it the under-16s who played Ecuador? Will we ever see the real England? ________________________________ • From: Mike Austin • Posted: June 29, 2006 • Comment: It isn't the refs that are performing poorly; it is the way they have set up this zero tolerance. Football is a contact sport and zero tolerance is unrealistic. If every ref applied every rule a game would take 3 hours and there would be no players left to play. The sport has too much money and too much politics involved so then they never get around to obvious improvments that are needed. ________________________________ • From: T. Eldin; Chicago • Posted: June 28, 2006 • Comment: Too many crucial mistakes by refs. There needs to be a video replay rule to help avoid all these bad calls! ________________________________ • From: Fred Madanje; Kenya • Posted: June 28, 2006 • Comment: Despite their first appearence, Ghana has won the hearts of many including mine. Poor officiating has been my worst nightmare in this year's World Cup. ________________________________ • From: Fr Tan • Posted: June 28, 2006 • Comment: When it comes down to 8 teams and 4 matches, the heat is on. When it gets to 4 teams, it certainly won't be a walk in the park, even for Brazil... ________________________________ • From: Alan Crouch; Australia • Posted: June 27, 2006 • Comment: We may have been underdogs, but we gave it our best shot! ________________________________ • From: F. Travisan; Rome, Italy • Posted: June 27, 2006 • Comment: To Aussies Soccer Fans. The Penalty for Italy was unfair as was the red card to Materazzi. 11 vs. 11 Italy would have won without the penalty. ________________________________ • From: Umesh; Ulm, Germany • Posted: June 26, 2006 • Comment: Scolari's devils will once again haunt Eriksson's England in the quarterfinal. Portuguese team showed the resilience, down one man against Holland and they displayed the spirit to hold it on the pitch. The match had its downside but both the teams were equally responsible for the lows. Go Portugal ... for the Cup! ________________________________ • From: Anna Pack; Namibia, Africa • Posted: June 25, 2006 • Comment: Germany has been the creme de la creme, their smooth victory through out has separated them from the masses. Quality football, I say, but then again with a sexy coach like that it can only be! ________________________________ • From: Alfonso; Seoul • Posted: June 25, 2006 • Comment: South Korea lost to Switzerland last Friday, which sadly meant we are out of the World Cup and we, the Red Devils (Korean soccer fans) may not be able to wear our Red t-shirts and face paintings for another four years. ________________________________ • From: Glover • Posted: June 23, 2006 • Comment: It's great to see Ghana play. Can't wait to see us beat Brazil come Tuesday. I think Ghana has made its mark on the international level as debutantes!! Black Stars, Go!!Go!! Black stars ________________________________ • From: Stephanie Johnson; Brazil • Posted: June 23, 2006 • Comment: It was the best birthday I could have ever asked for! Brazil beating Japan 4 to 1 but most importantly, having my two best friends; a Brazilian and Japanese celebrate the victory together. ________________________________ • From: Matthew McGaw; Australia • Posted: June 23, 2006 • Comment: A bit of Karma today - The USA coach said before the draw that Australia was only making up the numbers at the world cup. Today the Socceroos made it through to the round of 16 and the USA went out without a win. ________________________________ • From: Tony Stephens; Niger Delta • Posted: June 22, 2006 • Comment: It is no doubt that Germans have done very well in organizing a wonderful tournament and I will not hesitate in supporting them for a successive hosting if it is allowed by FIFA. But I am sad particularly because this sport, which we all love so much, is being marred by poor officiating. ________________________________ • From: Geoff Graber; Foster City, CA • Posted: June 22, 2006 • Comment: We need a song for the USA football (soccer) team. Chants of U-S-A, U-S-A can only go so far. So, here's my proposal: let's adopt the chant used by the Florida State Seminoles and Atlanta Braves with their famous tomahawk chop. As a UCLA Bruin and a follower of the SF Giants, I'm not exactly a fan of the 'Noles or Braves, but what the hell. It is distinctly American, everyone knows the song and how to do the chop, and we can be LOUD! ________________________________ • From: Ranganidhi; India • Posted: June 22, 2006 • Comment: Seems like England have a good midfield but they get confused when the opponents are all charged up during a corner kick. The forward players are defending in the far post and the defense is pathetic... Only Terry seems to be aggressive. Come on England, you need to show the world that u have the best talent to tear open any defense and you have the defense which cannot be breached. Come on its the time for England to lift the coveted trophy. _______________________________ • From: Angelo; Portugal • Posted: June 21, 2006 • Comment: Honestly, I can't understand how FIFA never chose to use video replay, the refereeing is at least inconsistent! With today's technology it would take a couple of seconds to know what really happened in the pitch. I should say FIFA could learn a thing or two from the North American Hockey Association! _________________________________ • From: Orest Kulewicz; Munich, Germany • Posted: June 21, 2006 • Comment: It was a historical moment to watch Ukraine score four goals in their first ever World Cup as an independent nation. The crowd went wild when Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko seized the moment and scored his first World Cup goal. _________________________________ • From: Leo Felnand Benedicto • Posted: June 21, 2006 • Comment: England played their best game by far in the tournament but produced only a draw against Sweden. I find that ironic since their past two matches, which produced two wins, their performance was dismissed by critics as uninspired, boring and unimaginative. It just proves that England's got the team but has yet to peak in their performances _________________________________ • From: VKent; Malaysia • Posted: June 20, 2006 • Comment: Now all the teams have played twice, and one more to go. Thus far, I must say Argentina is the only team who played "attacking football' and likely to lift the cup. Second will be Holland, followed by Brazil and Spain. Ghana and Ecuador cannot be taken lightly. Germany and England are merely filling up the slots. _________________________________ • From: Prosper Igbinoba; Dortmund, Germany • Posted: June 20, 2006 • Comment: Aside Emmanuel Adebayor's early forays into the Swiss goal mouth, which were not helped by the antics of the referee, the Togo lese form of play against Switzerland lacked tenacity of purpose and was bereft of the attributes of African football which encompasses aggression and skilful-entertaining football. Could Togo's lack-luster performance be due to the eventual payment of the players' outstanding bonuses-which probably gave the players a feeling of having nothing more to fight for? _________________________________ • From: Beeji; Saudi Arabia • Posted: June 20, 2006 • Comment: Someone should have had a video camera in my living room during the Spain vs. Tunisia match! I was freaking out because I thought Spain was going to lose. But then, Raul scored! I had to whisper-scream, because it was 11:30 at night...and BOY did I whisper-scream (in a bit of Spanish, too)!!! And I was literally bouncing off the walls, jumping and dancing and hugging the TV and doing cartwheels in the dark!!! I'm a huge Real Madrid fan and nothing beats Raul finally finally FINALLY opening his scorebook! Watch out, world...RAUL'S BACK!!!!! _________________________________ • From: Frank Schlüter; Berlin • Posted: June 19, 2006 • Comment: I was at Leipzig to watch FRA vs KOR 1-1. The Korean fans are really something, they do know how to dress up fan wise and how to celebrate. I just wonder how they would have partied if they had won! Incredible scenes, lifetime memories. _________________________________ • From: Dr Ofori-Adjei; Ghana • Posted: June 18, 2006 • Comment: Yes! Just when all had written us off we let all know that we were indeed the black shining star of Africa! Even my newly made German and Czech friends where happy for us. _________________________________ • From: Peter L • Posted: June 18, 2006 • Comment: Ivory Coast should get all the praise being a new comer and playing so impressively. Their individual skill, talents, power, and short passes have added great joy and excitement to watch the game, and many teams should learn from them. It is unfortunate they do not have the cohesiven team play and play as a team especially in their attacks. But, they definitely deserve the "Rookie of the Tournament." _________________________________ • From: Lucas Ayala; Hamburg • Posted: June 17, 2006 • Comment: Who is wearing the pants in this World Cup? Now we know it..!!! ARGENTINA WORLD CHAMPION 2006... like in 1986..!!!!! _________________________________ • From: Ana Maria; Portugal • Posted: June 17, 2006 • Comment: I must congratulate my squad on their good performance and victory over the Iranian team, which enabled them to advance to the knock-out stage with the maximum points. Go ahead Portugal let's win this tournament! _________________________________ • From: Kobe Olagunju; Nigeria • Posted: June 16, 2006 • Comment: From my own view I am so sure that this World Cup belongs to Italy and no one else. Ecuador is also a team to likely move further in this World Cup so please watch out for them. Though Germany is already through to the next round I tell you Ecuador is surely going to beat them in their final match. _________________________________ • From: Semira Gopie • Posted: June 16, 2006 • Comment: T&T played arduously for the entire 90 minutes of their game. It is our World Cup debut and we are making our competitors work for their victories. To think that a team ranked 56th in the world made a top seeded England wait until the 83rd minute to secure a victory says a lot about our fighting spirit. We sure did make the English fans nervous! _________________________________ • From:Christian Schwarz; Dortmund • Posted: June 16, 2006 • Comment: Everybody saying Ivory, Trinidad & Tobago and Togo are the most surprising team in this world championship. Sorry freinds but what is with Ecuador? Absolutely, the selection from South America are the biggest surprise in this event!!! Firstly, they smashed down Poland with 2:0 and then destructed Costa Rica with 3:0... Please, friends you have to buy popcorn and drinks for the match Ecuador-Germany. Ecuador is hot and want to defend the pole position of group A. _________________________________ • From: Juan Daniel; Ecuador • Posted: June 16, 2006 • Comment: After 2 matches, we are the first of our group above Germany, for the first time we advance to the next round and people are going nuts on the street. Thanks Ecuador for this incredible moment. SI SE PUEDE!!! _________________________________ • From: Sascha; Berlin • Posted: June 15, 2006 • Comment: DAVID ODONKOR IS THE BEST !!! _________________________________ • From: Nick; England • Posted: June 15, 2006 • Comment: In as much as I feel sorry for the Poles, Germany's victory was a combination of experience and youth. The youth being David Odonkor who fed the cross to the experienced player of Neuville who then blasted the ball into the net. Well done to Germany. _________________________________ • From: Peter Liew; Hong Kong • Posted: June 15, 2006 • Comment: Germany was lucky again !!! _________________________________ • From: Christian Schwarz; Dortmund • Posted: June 15, 2006 • Comment: I'm very proud about the Germans victory in the match Poland- Germany on yesterday evening. I was observing the game live at Westfalen- Stadion in Dortmund with other three friends. Definitely, that match was the greatest and most dramatic battle we have seen in the World Cup 2006. Although Poland was very hard to beat and was fighting with brave heart, I wanna say sorry that they lost any chance to qualify into the next round. Nevertheless, in Dortmund- City the hooligan situation was calming down. We celebrated though the night 'til 6 a.m. with our tasty beer. _________________________________ • From: Tegha Abeng; Cameroon • Posted: June 15, 2006 • Comment: We're African fans of Cameroonian origin, saying thank you to Tunisia. At least you made us smile a little. _________________________________ • From: Rey Pocot; Philippines • Posted: June 14, 2006 • Comment: Ronaldo is in poor condition this World Cup simply because he is over fat. That is why he's slow in working for the ball, but I think he can still create goals for brazil hope he will improve cause he is gifted with an extra ordinary talent. _________________________________ • From: Teddy Gorfu • Posted: June 14, 2006 • Comment: What was wrong with the Super Striker Ronaldo Yesterday. BIG QUESTION??????????? _________________________________ • From: Michael w Soi; Kenya • Posted: May 14, 2006 • Comment: It might be just me but I think the reason Ronaldo was not effective on Tuesday's encounter with Croatia was because there seemed to be a plot not to pass him the ball. _________________________________ • From: Festus Osunde; Switzerland • Posted: June 14, 2006 • Comment: The French team has always underestimated the Swiss, hence they referred to them as Petit Swiss. Today in Germany, the Swiss proved to be a hard nut to crack. Kudos to the Grand Swiss!!! _________________________________ • From: Allen Springer; Korea • Posted: June 14, 2006 • Comment: You didn't need to be in front of a TV last night to know the score of Korea vs. Togo. The entire city went wild each time Korea scored. The streets were filled with excitement for hours afterward with everyone chanting "dae han min guk" (translated republic of Korea) and honking their car horns in a similar pattern. _________________________________ • From: Denis Awah; Netherlands • Posted: June 14, 2006 • Comment: The performance of the Ivorian team against Argentina was so extraordinary. Although they were defeated, they can still go to the second round of the competition. All they need is to maintain the same strategy they used against Argentina for the remaining two matches left. ________________________________ • From: Tara & Steven; Japan • Posted: June 13, 2006 • Comment: All tickets were sold out at Australian bars in the heart of Tokyo, so we had no choice but to watch the game in a local Japanese bar with no other foreigners. The patrons were shocked when they saw 2 foreigners walk in...and then we turned around and showed them the huge Aussie flags hanging from our backs and they just all stood up and cheered. There were 2 spare seats, but the bar lady said they were reserved. To our surprise the entire bar 'booed' the ladies for reserving them and we were able to sit amongst the Japanese to watch the game. We felt outnumbered and defeated for the entire game until those last final minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________________________ • From: Jason Rodriguez • Posted: June 13, 2006 • Comment: I would like to congratulate the Australian side for their persistence and performance. I was truly proud to see them win this historical victory. _________________________________ • From: Jesse Taunton; Australia • Posted: May 13, 2006 • Comment: I love Australia maybe because I was born there and they just smashed Japan! _________________________________ • From: Joel Benjamin; Sudan • Posted: June 13, 2006 • Comment: The match between Ghana and Italy was one of the finest matches of the World Cup but I was really very sorry for what the referee did by denying two penalties of Ghana. But it does not matter much because after all its difficult for these African teams to win the cup. I want to see that the next match of Ghana should be much better and I pray for their success. _________________________________ • From: Lobna Gaayeb; Germany • Posted: June 13, 2006 • Comment: I am Spanish-Tunisian, doing a year of studies here in Germany as an Erasmus-exchange student.
