Egypt coach Shehata signs new deal
Mido argues with Shehata who has signed a two-year deal extension CAIRO, Egypt (Reuters) -- African Nations Cup-winning coach Hassan Shehata has been given a two-year extension to his contract, the Egyptian Football Association said on Monday. The 56-year-old steered his side to an emotional home triumph last month, beating Ivory Coast on penalties after the final in Cairo on February 10. Shehata will take charge of the title defense for the 2008 finals in Ghana with Egypt facing Botswana, Burundi and Mauritania in qualifying. He was involved in a public spat with striker Mido after taking off the Tottenham player during the second half of Egypt's semifinal win over Senegal in Cairo. The two traded insults in full view of the capacity 78,400-crowd after Mido objected to being replaced, but Shehata had the satisfaction minutes later of watching substitute Amr Zaki rise to head home the winner. Shehata was appointed coach in November 2004, taking over from Italian Marco Tardelli. He had previously been in charge at Cairo club Arab Contractors and also steered Egypt's under-20 side to victory at the 2003 African Youth Championships. Shehata played for Egypt for a decade competing at three Nations Cup finals.
