Presidential race raised in N.Y. Senate debate

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Spencer said his rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would make a "tremendous candidate for the president of the United States but not at the expense of New Yorkers."

Spencer spoke during a Sunday morning debate with Clinton, the incumbent U.S. Senator from New York. Spencer added that he would not vote for Clinton if she chose to run for the nation's highest office.

Clinton wouldn't say for sure if she plans to fulfill her entire six-year term if re-elected, prompting Spencer to accuse her of using New Yorkers' time to run for president.

"Sen. Clinton has been given the welcome mat by the people of New York six years ago and I believe she's using us as a doormat," Spencer said.

Sunday's debate covered key issues including the war in Iraq, taxes, national and local security, jobs and Social Security.

Spencer argued that in order to win the war in Iraq as well as resolve other key issues, the United States needs a unified Senate that works together and supports the president.

Clinton refused to back down from her criticisms of President Bush by saying, "I am not going to apologize for taking on the administration and the Republican majority because I believe they need to be held accountable."
