Senate challengers keeping pace with incumbents' fundraisingChallengers outraise Lieberman, ChafeeBy Robert Yoon CNN Political Research Director
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- With the mid-term congressional elections less than four months away, U.S. Senate hopefuls in key races nationwide are keeping pace with -- and sometimes outraising -- their incumbent opponents in the all-important contest for campaign cash, according to fundraising records filed recently with the Federal Election Commission. Challengers in several states, such as Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington State, have raised considerable amounts in the last few months, in some cases almost matching their opponent's haul in the same period. For example, in Montana, Democratic challenger Jon Tester was outraised by his opponent, incumbent Sen. Conrad Burns (R), by just over $4000, or roughly the maximum allowed contribution from two individual donors. Sens. Joe Lieberman (D-Connecticut) and Lincoln Chafee (R-Rhode Island) were each outraised from April 1 to June 30 by challengers hoping to take their job, though Lieberman and Burns have considerably more available cash than their opponents. If money were the only factor, Chafee would be the chamber's most endangered incumbent. He faces a primary challenge in September and has been consistently outraised and has less money in the bank than the likely Democratic nominee, Sheldon Whitehouse. CNN's Xuan Thai contributed to this report.
