Gerald Ford released from hospitalEx-president had been hospitalized for pneumonia
 Gerald Ford, 92, is the only U.S. commander in chief never elected to the presidency or vice presidency. RANCHO MIRAGE, California (CNN) -- Former President Gerald Ford was released Wednesday from the hospital where he was treated for pneumonia, his spokeswoman Penny Circle said. The 38th U.S. president had been hospitalized at Eisenhower Medical Center in Southern California since January 14. Ford, 92, was taken to the same hospital in December for tests. Circle would not say what type of tests. The one-time football standout also was hospitalized in 2003 after he became dizzy while golfing in 96-degree heat. In 2000, he was rushed to a hospital when he had a mild stroke while in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the Republican National Convention. Ford took the Oval Office in August 1974 after the Watergate scandal forced then-President Richard Nixon to resign. Ford is the only president to have held office without being elected by the voters to the presidency or vice presidency. He became Nixon's vice president in October 1973 after Nixon's running mate, Spiro T. Agnew, resigned and pleaded no contest to bribery, conspiracy and extortion. Ford sought the presidency in his own right in 1976, but lost to former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter.
