Aide: Ford eating, reading, eager to leave hospital
![]() Gerald Ford, 92, is the only U.S. commander in chief never elected to the presidency or vice presidency. RANCHO MIRAGE, California (CNN) -- Former President Gerald Ford is eager to leave the hospital where he's receiving pneumonia therapy, but he has been given no indication when he'll be discharged, his spokeswoman said Thursday. Ford, 92, is "getting out of bed, reading newspapers and eating well" at Eisenhower Medical Center, where he was admitted Saturday with pneumonia, said Penny Circle, his chief of staff. "He is in a good mood and wanting to return home," she said. Circle said earlier this week she thought the former president would be released Thursday. Another medical status report is expected Friday afternoon. Ford underwent unspecified tests in December at the same hospital. He also had a stroke during the 2000 Republican National Convention and was hospitalized in 2003 after suffering a dizzy spell while playing golf in 96-degree weather. In 1974, the one-time football standout became the 38th president of the United States after the Watergate scandal forced Richard Nixon from the Oval Office. Ford was chosen by Nixon to serve as vice president after Spiro T. Agnew resigned amid bribery, conspiracy and extortion charges. Ford is the only president to hold office without being elected to the presidency or vice presidency. He sought the presidency in 1976, but lost to former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter. CNN's Traci Tamura contributed to this report.
