Bush: Tax cuts must be permanent'One of the best decisions we made since I took office."
![]() YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSWASHINGTON (CNN) -- Tax cuts have fueled a booming economy, President Bush said Saturday, calling on the American people to back his drive to make those cuts permanent and to address other issues on his agenda for 2006. Those who do not want to make the tax cuts permanent are only interested in raising taxes, the president said during his weekly radio address. "Just as we're seeing new evidence of how our tax cuts have created jobs and opportunity, some people in Washington are saying we need to raise your taxes," he said. "They want the tax cuts to expire in a few years, or even repeal the tax cuts now." "To keep our economy growing, we need to ensure that you keep more of what you earn, and congress needs to make the tax cuts permanent." Bush called the tax cuts "one of the best decisions we made since I took office." The president said his administration has "been wise with taxpayers' dollars" by cutting the growth rate of non-security related spending but now needs to cut "mandatory spending or entitlements." "We do not need to cut entitlements, but we do need to slow their growth," he said. Bush promised that tax cuts were not the only item he would address. "A growing economy requires secure and affordable sources of energy, free and fair trade, legal reform and regulatory reform and a health care system where workers can find affordable care," he said. "And we must ensure that all Americans get a good education, so they will have the skills they need for the jobs of the 21st century."
