Lobbyist assistant loses inches, not pounds

(CNN) -- A lobbyist assistant in Washington, Donna Watts-Brighthaupt says she hopes to give up fatty foods and quit smoking, or at least cut back a bit, during the "New You Resolution."

Her boss, Frank Purcell, has joined her in her battle. He's a lobbyist for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

Watts-Brighthaupt signed up both of them for the "New You Resolution" without telling Purcell first. She broke the news after they were selected.

Here are Watts-Brighthaupt's goals for the program:

1. Lose 20 pounds.

2. Eat healthier and increase cardio workouts.

3. Stop smoking. Maybe.

March 7 update

Watts-Brighthaupt didn't quit smoking during the "New You" program. Neither did she lose much weight.

But she managed to cut back to just a couple of cigarettes per day. And she slimmed down, cutting inches off her waist and thighs, even though it wasn't accompanied by a large weight loss.

Still, she's driven to beat Purcell, her "New You" partner, who lost 23 pounds.

"Hopefully, when I see him in here with a couple of sagging pants, I'll get upset and say, 'No, I cant let him win,'" she said.

February 28 update

Watts-Brighthaupt loves her trainer, except when she's actually making her exercise.

"She's so hard on me!" Watts-Brighthaupt said.

But Tasha Cooper, her trainer, is quick with a reply.

"It's not about liking me, it's about liking your 'New You' body," she said.

February 21 update

Watts-Brighthaupt is down to two cigarettes per day. Perhaps she is finally taking her grandmother's advice to heart.

But that's not all. Watts-Brighthaupt also is slimming down a bit.

"I have lost a dress size!" she said.

February 14 update

Watts-Brighthaupt's admitted apathy about quitting smoking ran up against an immovable object recently: her grandmother.

"My grandmother found out. She's blind, and I don't understand how she found out that I smoke, so she nicely asked me if I could try to stop. When she speaks, the world stops," Watts-Brighthaupt said.

February 7 update

Even though Watts-Brighthaupt said she doesn't want smoking to be the main focus of her "New You Resolution," everyone else thinks it is a priority.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's senior medical correspondent, even asked Watts-Brighthaupt to take a class about cancer and its causes at a local college.

"Her first lecture, it was scary," Watts-Brighthaupt said. "It scared me, but I'm not sure it changed me yet."

January 31 update

Watts-Brighthaupt is five pounds closer to her goal of losing 20 pounds.

She's even suggesting changes to the office candy machine.

"We ought to put sugarless gum in the M&M machine because that would give us something to chew on. That'll [also] help with my smoking," she said.

January 24 update

Watts-Brighthaupt admits she got off to a slow start.

"Actually started this week, pseudo-started last week," she told her nutritionist, Ellen Carroll of Cooking Light magazine.

Nonetheless, Watts-Brighthaupt has seen some success. She lost three pounds and cut back to four cigarettes a day, one fewer than before.

January 17 update

Watts-Brighthaupt came to New York for cooking and workout lessons during the first week of the "New You Resolution." She was encouraged to shoot for four or five days of cardio workouts per week and three days of strength training.

She said she's going to try to quit smoking by easing her daily intake.

"I'm going to try to stop smoking," she said. "I'm not promising anything, but to try to find ways to incorporate the smoking thing with the eating and exercise. For example, just take two cigarettes out of the pack and putting them aside for the day."
