Learning Activity: Skin Cancer

(CNN Student News) -- Students will learn about the different types of skin cancer and ways to prevent the disease.

Procedure

To begin the activity, pose the following questions for class discussion:

  • What are your views on tanning?
  • How much time do you spend in the sun during the summer?
  • Do you wear sunscreen? Why or why not?
  • Do you wear protective clothing in the summer?
  • Then, refer student groups to the Web sites provided to learn about the different types of skin cancer and ways to prevent the disease. List the following questions to guide students' research:

  • What is the composition and function of human skin?
  • How common is skin cancer?
  • What are the most frequent types of skin cancer?
  • What are the signs and symptoms of these skin cancers?
  • What are the risk factors for skin cancer?
  • Why has the incidence of skin cancer increased in recent years?
  • Are tanning parlors safer than the sun?
  • What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
  • What level of SPF sunscreen should people use?
  • After groups present their findings, ask students: To what extent, if any, have your views about sun exposure and tanning changed as a result of your research? Following the discussion, have your class create a skin cancer awareness campaign to educate other students at their school about the dangers of skin cancer and ways to prevent the disease.
