Learning Activity: Investigate landmarks of the civil rights movement
RELATEDCNN STUDENT NEWS(CNN Student News) -- Students will learn about the history of the U.S. civil rights movement and identify landmarks that are significant to this movement. ProcedureBegin this activity by asking students: What is a landmark? Give examples. Do you think that it is important for historically significant places to be designated as landmarks? Why or why not? Following the discussion, refer students to the CNN Student News Extra!: Civil Rights Timeline and other resources to learn about key events in the history of U.S. civil rights from the 1780s to the present. Next, challenge each student to select a different official landmark of the civil rights movement or to identify a place that he or she feels should become an official landmark. Then, instruct students to prepare presentations about the location, history and significance of their chosen landmarks. Ask students also to include rationales as to why their sites were designated (or should be designated) as official landmarks. Have students deliver their presentations to the class and discuss.
