NEW YORK ( -- Contradicting a recent report in an industry newspaper, Mitsubishi Motor's U.S. division says the company has no plans to sell an electric car here.

Automotive News, citing a talk by Mitsubishi president Osamu Masuko at a dealer conference in Las Vegas, reported Monday that the company planned to sell an electric-powered car in the United States. No major automaker currently sells an electric car suitable for use on U.S. public roadways.

"Please note that contrary to the Automotive News story of earlier this week, there is currently no plan to sell this car in the U.S.," Mitsubishi spokesman Dan Irvin wrote in an email to reported on the Automotive News story on Tuesday. Irwin's email was sent in response to a request for comment made prior to's publication of that story.

The Automotive News report also mentioned a possible hybrid version of the car. The brief statement, emailed to by Mitsubishi spokesman Dan Irvin, did not mention whether the company would sell a hybrid car here.

Mitsubishi displayed an all-wheel-drive gasoline-electric hybrid car at the Detroit Auto Show in January, but the company does not currently sell a hybrid car in the United States.
