Al-Jazeera airs video of purported U.S. hostage

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A video allegedly made by the Islamic Army in Iraq shows what the group says is an American hostage, an Arabic-language TV station reported Tuesday.

The video, which aired on Al-Jazeera, shows the man sitting on a white plastic chair with his hands apparently tied behind his back.

It also shows the cover of a U.S. passport and what appears to be a local banking card with an account number, account type and a "client's name."

According to Al-Jazeera, the group said the hostage will be killed in 48 hours if the United States fails to release Islamic Army prisoners in detention.

The video also demands Washington pay restitution to the residents of Anbar province in western Iraq, where several joint operations against insurgents have taken place recently to enhance security before the December 15 elections.

CNN has not confirmed the authenticity of the video.

CNN's Octavia Nasr contributed to this report.
