JERUSALEM (CNN) -- A truck collided with a passenger train in southern Israel near Kiryat Gat on Tuesday, killing eight people and injuring nearly 200, ambulance services said.

At least 27 of the injured were in serious condition, 43 had moderate injuries, and 126 had what were described as light injuries, ambulance service said.

The crash derailed some of the carriages, which overturned, according to police and rescuers.

The train was on its way from Tel Aviv to Beer Sheva.

"It's sad that, when we have so many incidents of deliberate violence, that we should have such accidents happen as well, with so many casualties," Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told an audience of hoteliers in Jerusalem.

The last major train crash in Israel occurred in June 1985 in northern Israel when 19 children and two adults were killed when a school bus collided with a train.
