Minibus, U.S. tank collide: 6 dead
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Six people were killed when a minibus carrying Iraqi civilians collided head-on with a U.S. tank near Muqdadiyah, Iraq, a military spokesman said.
Eight people were injured in the crash about 6:45 a.m. Friday (10:45 p.m. Thursday ET).
The collision remained under investigation, said Maj. Neal O'Brien, spokesman for the 1st Infantry Division.
"This is a tragic accident," he said. "The tank attempted to turn away from the oncoming vehicle, but could not avoid the collision."
The bus was traveling in a southbound land when it attempted to pass a slower-moving vehicle in front of it, O'Brien said. The bus struck the tank's left front quarter panel.
Members of the 1st Infantry Division patrol stopped to render first aid and assistance to victims, he said. The wounded were taken to Muqdadiyah Hospital.
Muqdadiyah is about 45 km (28 mi) northeast of Baquba.
