LONDON, England -- A woman police officer was shot dead and another woman officer seriously wounded while responding to a robbery in the center of Bradford, northern England, police said.

The women officers had been called to a robbery at a shop in Morley Street, in Bradford's city center, at around 3.25 p.m. (1525 GMT), West Yorkshire police said.

The gunmen responsible are still at large, a spokesman added.

Eyewitnesses described how attempts had been made at the scene to resuscitate the officer.

A force spokeswoman told Reuters: "Police officers were responding to a report of a robbery at a shop premises.

"Two officers were shot. This proved fatal to one officer and the other officer is injured and is receiving treatment in hospital."

Tom McGhie, chairman of West Yorkshire Police Federation, confirmed two officers had been shot.

He told the UK's Press Association: "Two officers have been shot while responding to an armed robbery that was on-going in Bradford this afternoon."

McGhie added: "Police officers go to work and they expect to go home.

"Sadly this officer is not going to go home tonight."

Asked what he knew about the incident he said: "There was a call to a travel agent in Bradford about an armed robbery that was ongoing and the officers got to the scene and this tragic incident occurred."

Police said that most of the city center bars, restaurants and night clubs would be closed Friday evening and early Saturday.

Police fatalities are rare in Britain where most officers are unarmed. Only 89 officers have been killed on duty in the last 30 years.

The last woman police officer to die on duty was 29-year-old Alison Armitage, who was run over by a stolen car during an undercover operation near Oldham in 2001.

In 1997 policewoman Nina Mackay, 25, died after she was stabbed while trying to arrest a suspect in Stratford, east London.

The 1984 death of 25-year-old policewoman Yvonne Fletcher after shots were fired from the Libyan embassy in London led to Britain severing diplomatic relations with Libya for 15 years.
