10 held in UK anti-terror raids
SPECIAL REPORTYOUR E-MAIL ALERTSLONDON, England (CNN) -- British anti-terror police arrested 10 men during early-morning raids in the Midlands region and south of London, according to London's metropolitan police. Police executed warrants at three locations at 4 a.m., making the arrests "in connection with an ongoing investigation into suspected international terrorism in the United Kingdom" and are conducting searches at the places. However, the investigation that led to the arrests "is separate from the ongoing inquiries into the events in London," referring to the July bombings there. The ten are being held "on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000. "The arrests were made as the result of an intelligence led investigation involving police and the Security Service." Three of the men were arrested in south London's Croydon, and the others in the Midlands, including four in Wolverhampton and three in Derby. Those arrests were carried out "with the assistance of local officers from the Metropolitan, West Midlands and Derbyshire police." Police say "it is likely that these will continue for some time. The men arrested have been taken to police stations in the West Midlands, Derbyshire and in central London to be interviewed by detectives from the Anti-Terrorist Branch."
