5 dead in Kashmir cinema attack
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSSRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (CNN) -- Two attackers who targeted a cinema hall being used as a paramilitary barracks were killed Wednesday, along with three paramilitary soldiers, after a brief standoff and firefight, authorities said. "Both the intruders have been killed," said Ranjit Sinha, inspector general of the Central Reserve Police Force, a paramilitary force. Three people were injured -- a civilian woman, a paramilitary force soldier and a policeman. The incident began about 3 p.m. local time (4:30 a.m. ET), when the attackers hurled grenades into the Hawal cinema hall, then opened fire into it, according to a statement issued by Srinagar police. The paramilitary guards posted there returned fire, killing one of the attackers. The other entered the building, police said. It was surrounded by paramilitary forces, and heavy firing was heard, authorities said. It was unclear whether any paramilitary troops also remained inside the building with the attacker. Senior paramilitary officials rushed to the cinema hall. Because of ongoing search operations and tension in the area, traffic was diverted, Sinha said. CNN's Mukhtar Ahmed contributed to this report.
