U.S. service member, Afghan killed

(CNN) -- A roadside bomb tore through a Humvee in central Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing a U.S. service member and an Afghan interpreter, according to the U.S. military.

The Humvee was part of a resupply convoy and was struck south of Tarin Kowt in Oruzgan province.

A bomb investigation team is studying the site of the attack.

The name and unit of the service member have been withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

"We are saddened by our loss of our comrade," said Brig. Gen. Jack Sterling Jr.

"And our thoughts are with his family, especially at this time when we gather to give thanks for the blessings and liberties secured by the sacrifices such as those of this brave soldier."
