Karachi scene to frequent violence
![]() Fourteen people, including 11 French engineers, died in May 2002 blast. (CNN) -- The sprawling port city of Karachi, which has a population of about 14 million, has been the scene of numerous acts of violence in recent years. Following are some of the major incidents. September 9, 2005: Two nearly simultaneous explosions occurred at a McDonald's and a KFC fast-food restaurant. Three people were injured. May 30, 2005: A KFC restaurant was burned and six workers inside were killed during an outbreak of religious sectarian violence. February 28, 2003: Two policemen were killed in a gun attack outside the U.S. Consulate. June 12, 2002: Twelve people died and 50 were injured in a massive car bombing outside the U.S. Consulate, prompting the United States to cut staff numbers and relocate to a different building. The blast blew a hole in the consulate's perimeter wall. May 8, 2002: A suicide car bombing in front of the city's Sheraton Hotel killed 11 French engineers and three other people.
