SRINAGAR, Indian-administered Kashmir (CNN) -- Five Indian soldiers were killed Saturday when their convoy was ambushed in the southern part of the disputed territory of Kashmir, police said.

Jammu and Kashmir police said the convoy was traveling in Awantipur, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Srinagar, when suspected militants wielding automatics weapons and grenades launched an attack.

Along with the dead, four others were critically wounded in the ambush, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time (4 a.m. GMT).

Police said militants later took refuge in a building on a main highway near Srinagar. The road has been shut and police have cornered the structure.

India and Pakistan, both armed with nuclear weapons, have been at odds for years over the territory, but relations between the countries have eased lately.

Nevertheless, India continues to protest against violent actions committed by militants from Pakistan, which denies backing such attackers.
